PRIMECo-sponsored Film Screening　Film Screening & Talk: Scars of Assimilation: The Tayal Indigenous People of Taiwan and the Ainu Indigenous People of Japan

Taiwan is a multiethnic society with a history of incursions and rule by external powers. Japan also colonized Taiwan for 50 years, from 1895 until its defeat in World War II.

The event will feature a Tayal man whose father served as a police officer during the period of Japanese colonial rule, a pastor with extensive knowledge of Tayal history, and a Japanese woman who married a Tayal man.

Through assimilation policies, Indigenous communities were deprived of their names, languages, ancestral lands, and ethnic dignity. This event will explore the dignity and rights of Indigenous peoples and the prospects for restoring those rights by examining the scars of assimilation that continue to affect their lives today.
