PRIMECo-sponsored Research Forum July Regional Meeting of the Kanto–Koshinetsu Chapter of the Japan Society for Social Literature Israel/Palestine and East Asia Satoshi Ukai ”The Legacy of the Asian–African Writers’ Conferences and the Imagination of/for Palestine”
On February 28, 2026, the United States and Israel launched a large-scale attack on Iran. After causing numerous casualties, including many children, a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran is finally expected to be reached this June.
Meanwhile, since Hamas’s cross-border attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, Israel, with the support of the United States, has repeatedly carried out military operations in Gaza and the West Bank. The death toll is said to have exceeded 70,000.
The turmoil in the Middle East caused by imperial violence evokes memories of the violence of empires in East Asia. To better understand the causes and consequences of this ongoing crisis, the Kanto–Koshinetsu Regional Chapter of the Japan Society for Social Literature, in cooperation with the International Peace Research Institute (PRIME), will host a lecture by philosopher Tetsu Ukai, who has been actively engaged in public discussions on the Israel–Palestine issue.
In his lecture, titled “The Legacy of the Asian–African Writers’ Conferences and the Imagination of/for Palestine,” Professor Ukai will reflect on the historical and intellectual connections between anti-colonial movements and contemporary struggles for justice.
Admission is free, and all are welcome to attend.
